Sub Sahara Energy-Power Crises

This page will be updated as more examples come up. Know of any? Leave a comment.

We’ve heard hair-raising hearsays of power cut at Kotoka International Airport as planes were landing, plunging runway into darkness. We’ve even read worse ones about surgical operations being interrupted by power cuts. But it’s not just Ghana.

ARUSHA-TANZANIA Wednesday night as four presidents, three vice-presidents and top government officials from five countries witnessed the signing of South Sudan peace pact in Arusha-Tanzania...
Yes. But the good news is the pact was signed anyway.

SOUTH AFRICA Politician Helen Zille got stuck in an elevator for 20 minutes because of power cut.

Yeah she did just that:
"Stuck in the lift on the way to TV interview. Is this is what they mean by Stage 3 loadshedding. Or an ANC plot?"
Dumsor? You can run anywhere in Sub Sahara. But you are not guaranteed you'll be able to hide.

Sub Sahara Today: Arusha Peace agreement updates, Ebola bans lifted, Nigeria rules out UN-AU assistance

SOUTH SUDAN President Salva Kiir and rebel leader Riek Machar signed the peace agreement in Tanzania finally. This is to end a year-long civil conflict that has killed almost 50,000.

EBOLA Sierra Leone has lifted movement restrictions as infections abate. About 3 million people were restricted during the ban, which affected six of 14 districts and many villages since July. More than 3,000 Sierra Leoneans have died in the outbreak.

BOKO HARAM Nigeria’s national security adviser has told the BBC that the country does not need the help of UN or African Union troops to take on Boko Haram. He said neighbours Niger, Chad and Cameroon will be enough.

DR CONGO Government gives in to protesters. New bill to stop controversial move to delay elections due to census is underway.

Sub Sahara People: Mandela's Widow Graça Machel this week

She is the widow of former South African president Nelson Mandela and also of Mozambican president Samora Machel.

At the time of this post, Graça Machel is the only woman in history to have been first lady of two separate republics, serving as the First Lady of Mozambique from 1975 to 1986 and the First Lady of South Africa from 1998 to 1999.

Tweets: Sub Sahara and #SOTU

Discussions about The State of Union (delivered by Obama yesterday) in and concerning Africa were that of mixed reactions:

Flex your muscles America
USAID used the opportunity to highlight some of the achievements by America in the fight against Ebola.
Not Important
However Kenyan Twitter user @mkevoh thought there were more important things happening. As the “world is reading #SOTU”, bloody clashes were ongoing in DR Congo, he pointed out.

In God We Trust
South Africa's Catholic cardinal, Cardinal Napier was not amused by Obama’s #SOTU speech. He claimed the president barely mentioned God.
Facts and comparisons
@TheBaxterBean voiced out about #BlackLivesMatter with the #SOTU hashtag and made a comparison: “America right now incarcerates more blacks as percentage than apartheid South Africa did #SOTU”

@Juelzkarama also said: “I wonder what Kenyan investors bickering about the 5% CGT here think about Obama's CGT hike to 28% #Markets #SOTU @BD_Africa @NSEKenya”

Do more America!
A section of commenters complained enough hadn’t been done for Africa:

@FemmeTeacher: “We will continue to hunt down terrorists...except for when they're in Black Africa #BringBackOurGirls #SOTU”

@theGreenHouseFX: “If we are going to address terrorism around the world, you must include the killings in Africa... 2000 villagers dead? #SOTU #SOTU2015”

@KevinShawnHsu: “For real, does Africa exist in this foreign policy section of #SOTU?”
@Tjflcri: “#StopBokoHaram @USEmbassyAbuja @BarackObama #StateOfTheUnion Obama didn't condemned the brutality of Boko Haram only attack in France why?

Learn from Obama
A Ghanaian user @QwestMatic loved Obama’s speech:
“I have a dream that 1 day the president of Ghana will give a speech better than Obama's, here too #SOTU”

@NRI1983: “"We would make Community college free and reduce cost to zero" Barack Obama. #StateOfTheUnion.......Nigeria 2015 elections on my mind”
